Blood Gas Parameters and Acid–Base Balance during Extracorporeal Lung Support with Oxygenators: Semi-Empirical Evaluation

Membrane artificial lungs (oxygenators) are used in cardiopulmonary surgery as well as, some cases, severe lung disease to support the natural by means of ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation). The oxygen and carbon dioxide transfer rates any oxygenator usually assessed considering several blood gas parameters, such saturation, hemoglobin concentration, partial pressure dioxide, bicarbonate pH. Here, we report a set semi-empirical equations that calculate parameters directly from their pressures assess acid–base balance during ECMO. implementation this equation permits evaluation oxygenator, existing or prototypes development, development clinical decision-making tools for predicting state surgical interventions predicted results then compared with experimental data obtained vitro exchange investigations commercial using fresh porcine blood. high correlation, R2>0.95, between suggests possibility empirical simulation system an venous inlet also estimating therapy.
